sagwaaus:  May the souls in purgatory that can help sound come back to this room for the honor and glory of God please help us

Kudos to Saggy von Baggy for always being on the cutting edge of good Catholic doctrine (cough.) Is she trying to pick a fight, so she can scream Rosary persecution if someone bites? Notice she posted this after several others posted that they were having “difficulties with sound.” Maybe chatroom Rosary went too well for her comfort during her absence, so she had to pull something to put her back in the spotlight.
Anyways, this is newadvent on whether the poor souls in Purgatory can actually intercede for anyone, sources properly cited. I hope the august prefect of the Chatroom Doctrines of the Faith does not object too much.
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12575a.htm
Invocation of Souls
Do the souls in purgatory pray for us? May we call upon them in our needs? There is no decision of the Church on this subject, nor have the theologians pronounced with definiteness concerning the invocation of the souls in purgatory and their intercession for the living. In the ancient liturgies there are no prayers of the Church directed to those who are still in purgatory. On the tombs of the early Christians nothing is more common than a prayer or a supplication asking the departed to intercede with God for surviving friends, but these inscriptions seem always to suppose that the departed one is already with God. St. Thomas (II-II.83.11) denies that the souls in purgatory pray for the living, and states they are not in a position to pray for us, rather we must make intercession for them. Despite the authority of St. Thomas, many renowned theologians hold that the souls in purgatory really pray for us, and that we may invoke their aid. Bellarmine (De Purgatorio, lib. II, xv,) says the reason alleged by St. Thomas is not at all convincing, and holds that in virtue of their greater love of God and their union with Him their prayers may have great intercessory power, for they are really superior to us in love of God, and in intimacy of union with Him. Francisco Suárez (De poenit., disp. xlvii, s. 2, n. 9) goes farther and asserts "that the souls in purgatory are holy, are dear to God, love us with a true love and are mindful of our wants; that they know in a general way our necessities and our dangers, and how great is our need of divine help and divine grace".
When there is question of invoking the prayers of those in purgatory, Bellarmine (loc. cit.) says it is superfluous, ordinarily speaking, for they are ignorant of our circumstances and condition. This is at variance with the opinion of Francisco Suárez, who admits knowledge at least in a general way, also with the opinions of many modern theologians who point to the practice now common with almost all the faithful of addressing their prayers and petitions for help to those who are still in a place of purgation. Scavini (Theol. Moral., XI, n. 174) sees no reason why the souls detained in purgatory may not pray for us, even as we pray for one another. He asserts that this practice has become common at Rome, and that it has the great name of St. Alphonsus in its favour. St. Alphonsus in his work the "Great Means of Salvation", chap. I, III, 2, after quoting Sylvius, Gotti, Lessius, and Medina as favourable to his opinion, concludes: "so the souls in purgatory, being beloved by God and confirmed in grace, have absolutely no impediment to prevent them from praying for us. Still the Church does not invoke them or implore their intercession, because ordinarily they have no cognizance of our prayers. But we may piously believe that God makes our prayers known to them". He alleges also the authority of St. Catharine of Bologna who "whenever she desired any favour had recourse to the souls in purgatory, and was immediately heard".

Isn't it the church's stance that Purgatory is not a place, but a state of being and the soul is away from God during the purification period. That being said, how would a soul know to pray if they were away from God?

st. thomas aquinas agrees with you, anon. tradition from the days of the early church (maybe earlier, from the maccabean kings) has the living praying for them, not asking them for intercession.

6/02/2012 09:35:00 AM: interesting point. my understanding of catholic doctrine is that the souls in purgatory died in a state of grace, but are in a state of purgation, or temporal punishment for venial sin. Thus if they are in a state of grace, they are not in separation from God. the contention seems to lie in whether they, in their temporal state of punishment, still apart from the heavenly communion of saints, are in a condition to hear petitions for intercession from the living.

This is a good topic Anon. I don’t give as much thought to the poor souls in purgatory as I ought although almost every week at mass the names of recent deceased are mentioned then of course we all say the prayer for the (entire) Faithful Departed. I think of them as being in more need of *our* prayers than the other way around.

**CCC states: 958 Communion with the dead. "In full consciousness of this communion of the whole Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the Church in its pilgrim members, from the very earliest days of the Christian religion, has honoured with great respect the memory of the dead; and 'because it is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins she offers her suffrages for them. Our prayer for them is capable not only of helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective.**

Do they have a different level of prayer to our own? Do their intercessory prayers differ from ours (the living) or from the intercession of a soul (saint) who has made it to heaven? If they are able to *hear* our prayers, would the extent of their intercession be limited to those prayers for our spiritual welfare and graces, as opposed to material benefits or trite requests?

ruby: you nailed it again. it's either "st. ______, pray for our intentions," or "ruby, can you remember me in your prayers today," or "let's all pray for the souls in purgatory."

"souls in purgatory, if you can look past being scorched in purifying fire and ask God to fix my sound server, that would be really cool" stretches the bounds of credulity.

Interesting points, but if one dies in a state of grace then one is assured their place in heaven and not purgatory. If one goes to confession and gets hit by a bus as one leaves church. Chances are they go straight to heaven. Isn't that why the dying are giving the Sacrament of the Sick and Dying? So Heaven is assured?

CCC 1030-2 says that purgatorial souls are heaven-bound. the teaching of the church says purgatory is a temporal (temporary) state where venial sins are burned off like dross before the soul, finally purged of sin, receives an ultimate beatific vision of God.

Ruby:

Is the rosary a a special devotion, intrinsic to the Catholic Church, powerful and efficacious for souls in need, and a lively expression of faith in God and life in the Church? Of course.

Are baptized and confirmed Catholics allowed by the Church to theologize freely on matters where the Holy Magisterium has not ruled definitively? Hoo-rah.

Will the introduction of such matters in a Rosary devotion help induce a prayerful and meditative atmosphere, or distract the minds of the faithful from the matter at hand? You tell me.

Sincerely,
Arn O'Neill Moos

6/02/2012 11:06:00 AM **"souls in purgatory, if you can look past being scorched in purifying fire ...etc...**

Anon I can see where you're coming from. On the face of it, it seems a ludicrous request, but it has sparked off an exchange of ideas and opinions from which we can learn, hopefully?

6/02/2012 10:00:00 PM Arn. In chat or in here, some of us express theological opinions on a matters of disagreement among Catholics. Whether we're expressing the true teachings of Tradition Scripture and/or the Magisterium we don't always know. So yes I believe we do theologise in a *basic apologetical* way on matters where the Magisterium hasn't ruled definitively and even where it has. Whether that's permissible on the former, I really don't know.

Practice makes perfect. They say. Rosary has been ongoing in chat for years so I imagine that the devotional and meditative state of those long term participants is being perfected day by day. For me, not so much. I tend to drift off to check on the babies, answer a phone call or a PM. I can't say *definitively* whether these matters are helpful or otherwise for the others.

every Catholic adult is required to know correct teaching, tradition and scripture. there is one body of doctrine, one body of traditions, one scripture; and 1 pt 3:8 calls upon us to agree among ourselves and be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion and be self-effacing. i take this to mean that the spirit of christian love should prevail even when correcting a brother or sister's error.

As Catholics we should encourage and support each other. Learn from each other. I feel lack of those things is why Catholic chat is falling apart. I remember back when it was a place to learn more about the faith. I miss those ideas. Catholic turned on catholic because they didn't agree with a certain statement or thought. Instead of discussing things people were ridiculed. I long for the good old days but I fear they won't return.

Ruby: Hehe "feigning surprise" that they got a copy of the doctrinal assessment when it was issued, but timing the surprise when it was publicly released years later? Another neat psych-out trick that I noticed was the LWCR acting AS IF they were an autonomous or co-equal body with the CDF. I don't think there will be a showdown; maybe there will be a voice from the CDF reminding them of certain errors of their leadership and their vow of obedience. And maybe another voice from Pope Benedict's office if things aren't resolved. As for their representation: that is something they will have to resolve on their own.

Ruby read it again, the entirety of 34 and 35 in particular. Your excerpt makes a distinction between one individual's opinion (w/c may not spring from faith and therefore be erroneous)and the faith of the Church as a whole.

Anon. I posted the excerpt precisely because of the distinction it made. It is self explanatory. And I agree entirely with 34 and 35 (How could I not? It reads like Pope Benedict but doesn't say who the author is. Do you know?) It made me think of Jimmy Akin he's one of those very well known Apologists you'll find in the corridors of EWTN but he has some very questionable opinions on transubstantiation.

What is the Latin phrase that means *Reader Beware*?

I also think it commendable that Ruby has introduced threads dealing with serious matters of the Church here in DAP; and am pleasantly surprised at the brisk business they’re doing. However, if she were to take such things elsewhere, it might (inadvertently) constitute a sort of reverse-censorship: is theology too good for us regular DAP-dwelling anonymice? Just my own two cents on the matter: people will talk about things great and small somewhere they’re comfortable. She didn’t bring a bunch of cardinals into DAP; the people responding to her posts and posting their own views on the matter are also DAP regulars. If she wants to open a page of her own, it’s her call, but I for one am fine with theology right here in DAP.

I totally agree with you Anon. The Church is dealing with serious matters and as members we are able express our opinions so why not here with people we know?

I'm not a topic starter. There are other anonymous posters to thank (or blame, depending on the state of your moral character) for the turn in tone but I'm enjoying researching the issues that come up.

One Anon said *a time to reflect, a time to debate .....* I agree with that too.

6/06/2012 06:05:00 PM

I wouldn't know how to create a sophisticated style of blog like this and don't want to. There is a saying *don't judge a book by its cover* (is that biblical?) which can be applied to the DAP blog. Osmosis the owner doesn't post much but it's obvious he is a very intelligent person.

Anon. You have no idea how I use my time and it's none of your concern. For the record *THE KEY* is I don't have THAT kind of time despite having gone on a course at College two years ago, on web page building most of which I've forgotten. And I'm not bothered one way or the other. I'm perfectly happy to use this weblog to discuss things.

I don't have to EXCUSE myself to someone who doesn't have the presence to sign HER posts yet I find myself wondering why you care enough to tell me what I want to do, or not as the case may be.

It seems the LCWR and the CDF had a *cordial* meeting. Still nothing official re the outcome and what agreements have (or not) been reached. Left to the secular media, they portray the LCWR as kind hearted, elderly sisters doing their liberal best but being totally subjugated by the male dominated CDF.

They're enjoying their status as the *poor persecuted darlings of the Church*. If they're so out of step with the Catholic Church why don't they get out from under its protective mantle.

Not being an American sister or a member of the LCWR, my interest in the matter is purely one of curiosity. My "issue" with the case is how it is being reported in the secular media as a thinly-disguised brawl. At any rate, here is the text of Archbishop Peter Sartain's interview in National Catholic Reporter. This is as much as we civilians are likely to see, but imho the sordid details (don't think there are that many) are NOODB. :) http://ncronline.org/printpdf/blogs/ncr-today/sartain-lcwr-dialogue-work-progress

This is also a different sort of case than, say, the Curran incident, where one individual was called to the carpet, and the inconsistencies in his preaching pointed out. The LCWR has a membership numbering in the thousands; and this particular case needs to be handled with more delicacy. From what I am reading, the CDF is doing a good job, and exercising their functions in a spirit of Christian prudence and temperance.

Thanks for the link Anon. It was good to see +Sartain's response in print rather than paraphrased by the more liberal lefty reporters. (Actually the NCR fits that profile and is usually referred to by conservative Catholic writers as the National Catholic Fishwrap.)

I think it becomes the business of every member of the Church when some of the sisters/nuns in leadership roles within the LCWR are promoting heresies. If you look at Father Z's blog (link below) i will explain where I'm coming from and really is worth a look.

I agree it is a delicate matter because I don't believe the majority of LCWR are pro-choice but the CDF have a responsibility to point out and correct doctrinal error where they see it occur.

This is the prefect, Cardinal Levada, in your favorite fishwrap again. http://ncronline.org/blogs/exclusive-interview-levada-talks-lcwr-criticism-states

BTW the LCWR are sisters (as I have been repeatedly corrected) though several blogs refer to them as nuns. I was surprised to see the amount of blog activity on the LCWR topic: more than 5 google pages of blogspot sites.

I thought the LCWR was made up of both? Though the *leaders* of it seem to be sisters, the difference being in the vows each take. The fishwrap though, has already steered the brawl towards one of property ownership, looking at the Levada interview.

The more I learn about the leadership of the LCWR the more barmy I think they are.

I found this beauty, penned by one of the Sisters.

***The crux of the matter, as it were, is that most of the nuns, like many Catholics, have matured beyond the Vatican’s imaginings. The notion that postmodern Catholics assent to “the doctrine of the faith that has been revealed by God in Jesus Christ, presented in written form in the divinely inspired Scriptures, and handed on in the Apostolic Tradition under the guidance of the Church’s Magisterium,” (or, simply, the fathers know best) is simply ludicrous."***

More here:

IMHO clarifies the statements I've been reading about them *moving beyond Christ*. They've become a law unto themselves and are about to implode.

ruby, the vatican's position was made clear in the original doctrinal assessment. what we are seeing now with these repeated meetings and interviews is the mopping up. it may take years, but in the middle ages, such things took centuries.

I disagree for two reasons. 1. You can't speak on behalf of *most American Catholics* and 2. every single Catholic Newspaper has been reporting the LCWR issue off and on for years and more so since April. The NYT covers it regularly.

6/18/2012 08:58:00 AM

You can always lodge a formal complaint about me, to the blog owner and have me forcibly removed or join in the debate. I hate to think of you on the fringes wearing only your *dumbass* hat.

6/18/2012 09:23:00 AM

The CDF raised its concerns back in 2001. Its position is clear, it's the LCWR that is stalling the process by beating about the bush and not making their position clear. (IMHO it's clear to me they're basically protestant and haven't the integrity to admit it.)

6/18/2012 09:29:00 AM

Can't beat variety. :P

It would be good to know who's posting here sometimes though the guesswork is half the fun.

Great to see you both making a contribution to the discussion. Do you have an opinion on the activities of the LCWR yourselves?

The CDF looked into the issue in 2001, AND they also took the LCWR's gauntlet to meet with them in a free and open forum. That is the CDF being smart: free and open means the LCWR's rank and file membership can see what their leadership is up to.

this forum is called DUMBASS ..not appropriate for religious discussion. If osmo wanted this to be for such, he would have made it so. Thinks ruby and others should create a specific blog for religious discussion instead of trying to hijack someone's elses
